Early Childhood Education

Birth to Three Program

West Central School District coordinates with the Center for Disabilities to provide a birth to three program that is designed to contribute to the success of children. The Birth to Three early intervention program serves children from birth to 36 months with developmental delays or disabilities and their families. These children may have difficulty learning, growing or behaving like other children in their age group or have a medical condition, which doctors feel may need special attention. Birth to Three services are available to any family who has questions about the development of their infant or toddler or who have an interest in a no-cost developmental screening and/or evaluation. If you suspect your child has a developmental delay or you just have questions concerning your child’s development, please call the Center for Disabilities at (605) 357-1439 or 1-800-658-3080.

Early Childhood Special Education (3 – 5 year olds)

A center-based early childhood program is provided for children who have been evaluated and identified as having developmental delays. Children attend sessions 2-4 morning or afternoons per week, determined by individual needs.  The program is based on developmentally appropriate practices, focusing on the individual needs of the child. The goal of the program is help all children learn and develop through positive peer interactions, multi sensory experiences, hands on explorations and play. Developmental screenings are held in September of each year as well as throughout the year upon request.  For more information, please call the Special Services Office (605) 528-3217.
